How NHL standings work
Every NHL team plays an 84-game regular season in 2026–27. A win is worth two points, an overtime or shootout loss is worth one point, and a regulation loss is worth nothing.
Teams are ranked by points. When teams are tied, the NHL applies its tiebreakers in order — starting with points percentage and regulation wins (RW), which reward winning in 60 minutes rather than in overtime or a shootout.
Sixteen teams reach the playoffs: the top three in each of the four divisions, plus two Wild Card teams from each conference — the next two best records regardless of division.
