How the 2027 NHL Draft Lottery Works
The 2027 NHL Draft Lottery decides the top selections of the 2027 NHL Draft, and the odds are tied to how teams finish the 2026-27 NHL regular season. Every club that misses the playoffs is entered, with the worst finishers holding the best odds.
The league runs two weighted drawings: the first sets the No. 1 overall pick and the second sets the No. 2 pick. A team can climb no more than 10 spots from its standings position, so clubs outside that range slide down instead of jumping the board. Teams that do not win a drawing are placed in the remaining lottery picks in inverse order of the standings.
2027 NHL Draft Lottery Odds
Lottery odds and the pre-lottery draft order come straight from the 2026-27 NHL standings. The naming can look confusing: the season is the 2026-27 season, while the draft held after it is the 2027 NHL Draft — so 2026-27 results produce the 2027 lottery odds.
The simulator above uses the current 2026-27 NHL standings. Odds belong to lottery positions, so a team's odds change as it moves up or down the standings during the season.

NHL Draft Lottery FAQ
How does the NHL Draft Lottery work?
The NHL holds two separate weighted drawings among the teams that miss the playoffs. The first drawing determines the No. 1 overall pick and the second determines the No. 2 pick. A team can move up a maximum of 10 positions from where it finished in the standings, and every team that does not win a drawing slots into the remaining picks in inverse order of the regular-season standings.
What is the 2027 NHL Draft Lottery Simulator?
It is a free tool that runs the lottery format using weighted odds so you can see who could win the first two selections and how the rest of the 2027 NHL Draft order would fall in behind them. You can re-run it as many times as you like to see different outcomes.
How are the 2027 NHL Draft Lottery odds determined?
Lottery odds come from the final 2026-27 NHL regular-season standings: the team with the fewest points gets the best odds and odds decrease from there across the 16 non-playoff teams. The simulator uses the current 2026-27 NHL standings, so the lottery order is provisional and will change throughout the season. Odds belong to lottery positions 1 through 16, from 18.5% for the last-place team down to 0.5% for positions 15 and 16.
Can a team move up to the first overall pick?
Yes, but only within the 10-spot limit. A team can climb no more than 10 positions from its standings slot, so only clubs positioned inside the top 11 of the lottery order can end up with the first overall pick. A winner from further back moves up 10 spots, and the pick it couldn't reach goes to the best-placed remaining team.
When is the 2027 NHL Draft Lottery?
